Weekly Lists #3: Things You Learn on a Holiday
Every week, I post a list of random stuff. This week: 5 things I’ve learnt on my latest holiday!
So from the 10th until the 17th of September, I went on a holiday to England and Scotland. You learn quite a lot about yourself and the people you are travelling with when you’re basically stuck with each other for 8 days straight, usually in small places (a car, a tent, a room) – here are some of the things I’ve learnt:
1. I NEED my personal space.
A lot of it actually. By the end of the holiday, I’d taken to spending way longer than necessary in the bathroom, because at least I was on my own there. Usually, I try to escape in a book or in some music in the car, because there’s always a lot of time spend in there, but as I was the co-driver, I didn’t have that luxury. I basically spend 8 days staring at the road, the map, and the GPS, and by the end of it, I wanted to scream – I needed a room, all to myself, with a good supply of books, drinks and food so I wouldn’t need to see anybody for a while, ASAP.
2. I LOVE travelling.
I always knew this of course, and I’ve been incredibly blessed in that I’ve had the opportunity to travel quite a lot with my family, but even on my own, when I was the one organising things – I love it. I love seeing new places, I love getting re-acquainted with old ones, I love watching people, noticing habits – I love discovering.
3. I DO NOT do messes.
At all. Am I a neat freak? Not necessarily – I know my parents, at least, even consider me to be something of a slob (the floor of my room is hardly ever visible all at once). But there’s an order to my chaos, and a mess does not have this order – and as such, I cannot handle them. My two companions had much less of an issue with this, and, yes, I actually got mad about it once – stupid, really, because you just sort of have to learn together, but still – in my defence: it was late, I was tired, and I’d just spent the entire day with wet feet because my All Stars finally reached the point of broken beyond repair and I hadn’t any spare ones with me on our walk.
4. I should NOT EVER be allowed in a bookstore without proper supervision.
You want proof? I spent more money on books in 8 days, than I did on food and sleeping-places combined. I’m not entirely sure about this, but I’m pretty sure that, even if you added my part of the gas for the car to that, I’d still have spent more on books than on those three combined. Just don’t leave me alone in a bookstore. As a matter of fact, don’t even let me enter one. I have no self control, and I might just drag you down with me.
home.
Did I enjoy every minute of the trip? Yes (well, just about, I suggest we don’t count the parts about personal space and messes). Would I love to go back some day, preferably in the near future? Also yes. But was one of the happiest parts of the journey coming back home, sleeping in my own bed, being able to do what I please and when I please? Absolutely, definitely, without any doubt: YES.
